We host a three-year boarding school for deaf children; we usually have around 10 children in the program at a time.
Poor parents in Haiti often don’t know how to deal with kids with disabilities. Deaf children may simply be ignored in the struggle to survive. We provide a program that educates hearing impaired kids in American sign language (the lingua franca for deaf people in Haiti). We give kids an education that is available to them nowhere else and empower them with skills to thrive despite their disability. We also give them a community that understands them for the first time in their lives.
Our program is co-located with our orphanage, so our hearing kids are always learning to be friends with the hearing impaired.
There are opportunities for American Sign Language speakers to visit our program and teach or just be friends with our kids. You can also sponsor the kids in our deaf school to fund their once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. You can identify the deaf children in our database by the letters “DM” in front of their name.
